The South Australian Railways 520 class locomotive
Because of the need for more motive power during the second world war, the 520 class were designed & built at the SAR Islington workshops, a total of 12 were built & the last, 531, entered service 19-12-1947 & as they had a light axle loading, they were able to run to most country destination, releasing the larger power locos for main line running.

The design was based loosely on the Pennsylvania Railroad’s T1 loco, with 520 entering service on 10-11-1943, painted green & gold & named Sir Malcolm Barclay-Harvey, the loco was condemned on 8-5-1964, having run 527,641 miles, but was restored in 1972 by the ARHS (Steam Ranger) & ran tours throughout SA, whilst 523 is preserved at the National Railway Museum at Pt Adelaide.
When the main Melbourne line was standardised in 1996, Steam Ranger relocated to the
Mt Barker-Victor Harbour line, where 520 ran tours, but is now out
of service at Mt Barker
 awaiting major repairs.
