The South Australian Railways (2nd) ‘F’ class was first introduced in 1902 to run on the suburban services, they were built to replace the smaller G & P classes. F167 was built as a ‘pattern’ engine at the SAR Islington workshops & after proving successful a further 43 were built over the period to 1922, at Islington (22), James Martin, Gawler (12) & Perry Engineering (10). F251, now running as a preserved engine with Steam Ranger was built in 1922 by Perry Engineering & condemned in 1962 after running 877,000 miles. In 1963, F251 was placed on display at the Elizabeth West Shopping Centre, later Steam Ranger acquired it in 1981, where over the next few years it was restored to operating condition & was recommissioned in 1995, to run tourist trains over the suburban network & the Barossa. When the main Melbourne line was standardised in 1996, Steam Ranger relocated to the Mt Barker-Victor Harbour line, where F251 has been a popular attraction on the Cockle Train, between Goolwa & Victor Harbour.
