As a child I was always fascinated by trains & like
most
boys, want to grow up to be an engine driver, when I was old enough I
tried to join the railways as a fireman, but failed due to my eyesight,
but I never lost my interest, but other things came along, so it got
pushed onto the backburner.
In the 1970’s I joined the Australian Railway Historical Society (later to become Steam Ranger) & my wife & I together with our 2 boys travelled on a number of their tours, later to work on them, doing everything from ticket sales, car attendant, bar car to deputy train manager. In later years I started working at the National Railway Museum at Port Adelaide in the archives, cataloguing photos & scanning them into the computer, a satisfying but time consuming pastime. Come with me as we journey back in time & have a brief look at the magnificent locomotives & trains that ran on the South Australian Railways & those that are preserved today, also I may add from time to time articles of other systems. I will endeavour to add pages on a regular basis & as this is just my viewpoint as an enthusiast, it is not intended to be an historical document, so please forgive any minor errors & unless otherwise noted, all photos are my own. I also wish to thank my friend Ann-Marie for her help & preparation of this site. A selection of these photos, many of a higher resolution are available for purchase on eBay ( please use the link below ) & feel free to contact me & send your constructive comments & short railway stories.
